Successful maintenance of family relationships by inmates has been linked to reduced recidivism rates. It is also suggested that successful maintenance of family relation-ships through visits can contribute to a safer correctional centre climate.
It is therefore imperative that inmates should be provided with the means of maintaining (monitored) written and spoken communication with their families and members of the public and unmonitored contact with prescribed persons such as legal representatives and the Ombudsman.
