Charter of Victims Rights

The Charter of Victims Rights (the Charter) sets out how victims are to be treated in NSW. 

The Charter outlines 18 rights, including your right to:

• be treated with courtesy, compassion and respect
  
• information about, and access to, welfare, health, counselling and legal services, where available
  
• information about the investigation and prosecution of the offender
  
• protection from the offender and protection of privacy.
  

If you are a victim of crime, you have rights under the Charter.

Who is covered by the Charter of Victims Rights?

• A person who suffers harm as a direct result of an act committed by another person in the course of a criminal offence in NSW. 
  
• A member of the immediate family if someone dies as a result of an act committed. This includes children and young people who have been harmed as a result of a criminal offence. 
  

Who must uphold the Charter? 

• Everyone working in NSW government departments. 
  
• People working in non-government agencies, and private contractors, funded by the state, who provide services to victims of crime.
